The New Brunswick Provincial Exhibition is proud and excited to announce the new Greener Fair Program for 2018.

Plastic Straws will be Prohibited at the NBEX, Along with Plastic Cutlery and other Non-recyclable Plastics, and Styrofoam Containers.

The NBEX Greener Fair Program was inspired by Lynn Facey’s Grade Four class at the Gibson-Neill Memorial Elementary School.  The children at Gibson-Neill Memorial Elementary School have succeeded in convincing their cafeteria to do away with plastic straws in an effort to prevent harm to wildlife. “We have met with the Grade 4 class”, stated Vokey, “and we have asked them, what more they would do if they could”. The class will participate in the NBEX to promote other schools in the area to stop using plastic straws.

NBEX Organizers are committed to protecting the future of the exhibition. “We can’t accomplish that without considering how we are impacting the environment.” stated Mike Vokey, CEO for the NBEX. “We have a duty to make the annual event more environmentally friendly and to educate and inspire individuals and organizations to do the same.” Working together with the thousands of visitors we can reduce our carbon footprint following the basics, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle. We can also offset our Carbon foot print by simply planting a tree. This year the NBEX will be providing free tree seedlings to take home and plant to help our visitors reduce their Carbon footprint. Each tree planted once mature tree can absorb on average 48 pounds of carbon per year.

The NBEX will also assist visitors reduce their Carbon footprint by providing guests the new litter-free biodegradable admission wristbands. The exhibition will provide multiple sorting stations allowing visitors to separate and recycle their trash. The midway carnival rides are also contributing to the program by reducing the power consumption, as all rides in 2018 will have been converted to energy efficient L.E.D. lighting. In addition the engines that power the rides have been upgraded to improve their fuel efficiency.

On the education side, the NBEX will feature Rain forest Animals in  Little Ray's Nature Centres “Under the Canopy” exhibit. This will be an interactive and educational museum quality live animal exhibit featuring the very popular sloth. Little Ray's Nature Centres is the largest exotic animal rescue in Canada.

The NBEX green initiatives won’t solve the problems with our environment but they will have a real impact. Organizers plan to give away 10,000 tree seedlings which if all are planted, can reduce 217 tons of Carbon.  When you plant trees, you don't just make your property or your community nicer. You also directly reduce your carbon footprint.

NATURAL CARBON EATERS

Every living thing on earth is made up of four basic elements -- carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. They make up about 96 percent of your body, and they make up most of a tree's roots, trunk, branches and leaves as well. We get our carbon by eating it through our mouths. Trees, on the other hand, breathe it in the way that we breathe in oxygen. When a tree breaths, it inhales carbon dioxide and exhales oxygen -- the exact opposite of what humans do. This natural process helps to clean the air.

When you plant trees, you are directly cleaning the air. As a tree matures, it can consume 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year as it turns that CO2 into parts of itself. It also releases enough oxygen to supply your needs for two years. These two effects help to give the earth a healthier climate.

If you're looking to reduce your carbon footprint, planting trees is one of the most effective ways to do it. Along the way, you also beautify your house or office as well as potentially increase its value by as much as 20 percent. A nicer home, a better environment and more money in your wallet -- if those aren't reasons to plant trees, what is?
